Our Team!

We are committed to fostering a collaborative and inclusive research environment that values diversity, equity, and belonging. Our lab provides opportunities for undergraduate and master's students to gain hands-on experience in laboratory research and develop skills that will prepare them for careers in academia, biotechnology/industry, healthcare, and anywhere else they may go!

Dr. Emma Carroll, PhD

Carroll Lab PI

Dr. Emma Carroll is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Chemistry at San José State University. She received her Ph.D. in the Marqusee Lab at UC Berkeley where she studied the effect of ubiquitin on protein energetics and subsequent proteasomal degradation. She then completed her postdoctoral training in the Gestwicki Lab at the University of California, San Francisco, where she developed small molecule dyes that recognize specific conformations of aggregated proteins in neurodegenerative diseases. In her free time, she enjoys exploring Bay Area trails, trying new restaurants, and hanging out with her family and two cats, Stella and Dusty.

Hannah Nicole Suazo

SJSU Research Student

Hello my name is Hannah Nicole Suazo and I am a Molecular Biology major. I enjoy anything that is related to biology and chemistry, so for my career goal, I hope to be a Clinical Lab Scientist at a hospital. Outside my love for science, I also love playing musical instruments, especially the drums. I also really like martial arts, as I have learned wushu, kajukenbo, and Brazilian jiu-jitsu.

Anushree Bhattacharya

SJSU Research Student

Hi! My name is Anushree Bhattacharya and I am majoring in molecular biology. I am interested in the field of biotechnology and bioinformatics. Research, for me, is unlocking the door to real-world applications of the concepts we learn in lectures and observing them come to life in the lab.
Outside of my academic pursuits, I love to sketch and paint using different media. I am a nephophile, one who loves clouds and capturing different shades of sky. Feel free to reach out to me if you're interested in art or love gazing at clouds! I will be happy to chat.

Hi all, I am Tiffany Nguyen! I’m majoring in biochemistry and discovering my love for working in lab.  I’m progressing towards becoming a Clinical Lab Scientist in order to help healthcare workers find the best solution to treat patients! Being in this lab has not only built my confidence in my skills but also myself! When I’m not in lab or studying, I work part time as an after school care teacher for grades KG-8. I enjoy spending time with friends and family and love it when others tell me stories about anything and everything. I have an excessive fascination with enamel pins and it can be seen in my highly decorated tote bag :,)

Hi, my name is Trang Pham, and I’m a member of Team p53. I’m majoring in Chemistry with a concentration in Biochemistry. Being in Dr. Carroll’s lab has helped me realize my passion for working in research, and I hope to make it my career someday. I’ve learned so much from the lab experience! Outside of school, I love traveling, playing TFT, and enjoying my favorite drink, boba!

Hello, I’m Jeslyn Hopham!  The motivation of my Biochemistry major is fostered by my desire to grow a greater foundational understanding of neurochemical pathways.  I’m intrigued by books and seminars related to the results of these processes.  Aside from this, I love to play and listen to piano, and do anything that gets my blood rushing.
